The Afro-Latin American Research Institute (ALARI) and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, both at Harvard University, in collaboration with USP-PRIP and the University Consortium for Afro-Latino, hosted the history-making three-day ALARI Conference, which gathered about 1,500 mostly Afrodescendant participants in the prestigious Faculty of Law at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Among the over one hundred sessions was the workshop “Pre-Texts international.” During the morning of July 10, Pre-Texts facilitators shared their experiences: Marilucia Lago gave account of her adaptations of Pre-Texts for psychological therapy practice in the state of Goiás, Brazil; Victoria Mena reviewed her extensive capacity building in Colombia, most recently at the Tadeo Lozano University, Luis Reyes reviewed the heroic facilitation by students and himself, under fire from a conservative university president at San Marcos in Peru; Carlos Correa summarized the work by dance company Sankofa in Colombia, and facilitated an interpretive dance activity with a page from Changó, el gran putas, by Manuel Zapata Olivella.
Among the future facilitators for Pre-Texts who participated in the workshop are Renée Cordero, Assistant Professor at Williams College who plans to bring Pre-Texts to the Dominican Republic, and Layli Brown, Director of Museo Afro Costa Rica.
