Futebol Viral Live Event

This Saturday, July 18th, Futebol Viral will do a live Facebook event with Brazilian soccer player Elzo Aloisio Coelho. Fill out this form for the chance to win a shirt autographed by the 1986 Brazilian team. The live Facebook giveaway will be held on Sunday, July 19th.

Futebol Viral is an interactive platform designed to engage men and to mitigate the Covid-19 spike in domestic violence.

Digital Pre-Texts in Kenya

A digital Pre-Texts workshop led by Tom Osborn (Founder, Shamiri Institute; Harvard ‘20) and  Prof. Doris Sommer will be held on July 17th and 18th, 2020. Click here to register. Pre-Texts in Paraguay

The Instituto Desarrollo was awarded a USAID grant to strengthen Paraguayan higher education institutions to improve the rule of law, decrease corruption and increase support for democracy. As part of this project, ID has partnered with Cultural Agents to use Pre-Texts as a training platform to establish a culture of accountability and creativity across Paraguayan organizations and rule of law institutions. From July 2nd to July 16th, Doris Sommer and Human Rights expert Marco Abarca facilitated an online Pre-Texts training (5 sessions, 3 hours each). Read more here.

Musical Pre-Texts

On July 1st, 2020, cultural theorist & acclaimed author José Falconi introduced Pre-Texts – a literacy methodology that fosters civic engagement and high-order learning through the arts. Participants discovered how the Cultural Agents Initiative at Harvard University has applied Pre-Texts in diverse settings across the Americas for more than two decades, and how the power of Pre-Texts can be applied in different settings. The event was curated by LUAN Museo Emocional (Mexico) in partnership with the Global Leaders Program. Watch the talk here.

Where Do We Go From Here: A Fundraiser for Black Lives

Hosted in partnership with Harvard Book Store, on July 12 we welcomed celebrated scholars Elizabeth Hinton, Robin D. G. Kelley, Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Brandon M. Terry, and Cornel West for a fundraiser and online panel discussion of the Black Lives Matter movement. Just under $10,000 was raised, and all proceeds were divided equally and distributed to three organizations selected by our panelists: Critical ResistanceNational Bail Out, and The Owl Movement Inc.

Touching on everything from police violence to the ongoing work of dismantling white supremacy in America, this panel of nationally renowned academics, authors, and cultural critics discussed not only where we are and how we got here, but where we must go to secure a racially just future.

Alas de distancia‘Human hummingbirds’ promote social distancing in Colombia

People dressed as hummingbirds to perform “Alas de distancia”, a program backed by Bogota’s mayor to promote physical distancing as a preventive measure against the spread of COVID-19 in Colombia. The strategy aims to strike a balance between easing restrictions and health care for the population.

Opportunities

Through Contrary’s Gap Year 2020 program, Contrary will be investing up to $100,000 in 5 companies who choose to build this coming year rather than attend school virtually.

The only requirements are that teams commit to working on their company full-time from September through Spring of 2021, and that at least one member of the team is taking a gap year to build the company (undergrad/grad students and dropouts are welcome). They are also interested in funding international students, irrespective of visa status.
