Harvard interns Debora Ortega-Maldonado and Paul Palmer facilitated three workshops at different institutions in Paraguay. The first workshop, Slow & Steady, aimed to enhance literary comprehension among deaf students using “The Tortoise and the Hare.”, by Harriet Rosenbloom. It encouraged critical thinking about themes such as arrogance and perseverance, using physical activities to aid understanding. This workshop was part of an Instituto Desarrollo program for deaf students who are studying Sustainable Development and are college-aged and up. The workshop started on June 26th.
Additionally, Debora and Paul participated in implementing the Pre-Texts protocol in public schools. They evaluated and took part in a Pre-Texts session at Escuela Básica N° 162 Vicente Ignacio Iturbe, and interviewed the director and academic coordinator of Escuela Virgen Stella Maris, Básica N° 617.
The second workshop, Exploring English through Literature, helped undergraduates at Instituto Desarrollo improve their English skills using Poe’s “The Raven” to explore complex themes and sentence structures. This workshop ran from June 24th to 28th.
