Author and activist Erri De Luca participated in a Pre-Texts experience at Reggio Emilia Prison. In the Orione protective section, inmates engaged with De Luca’s book ‘Tre cavalli’ using the Pre-Texts methodology.
Pre-Texts experiences at Reggio Emilia Prison are led by Sara Uboldi (ISPC-CNR) and Cecilia di Donato (Teatro MaMiMò of Reggio Emilia). The scientific direction is provided by Pier Luigi Sacco and Alessandro Crociata, with support from the Bach Center (Biobehavioral Arts & Culture for Health, Sustainability, and Social Cohesion).
After his visit, Erri De Luca shared the following statement on his foundation’s website:
Quando incontro persone detenute in prigione non ho desiderio di sapere per quali accuse si trovano rinchiuse né per quale durata.
Condivido qualche ora dei loro giorni e il mio tempo si accosta per un poco al loro.
Hanno letto un mio libro, espresso il desiderio di incontrarmi, espedito le procedure necessarie. Eccomi con loro.
Carcere di Reggio Emilia, sezione Orione, ospita persone transessuali. Hanno aderito a un programma che si chiama Pretext, sviluppato da una docente dell’Università di Harvard, applicato per la prima volta in Italia.
Si parte dalla lettura di un libro.
“Lo poniamo al centro del nostro cerchio e lasciamo il più possibile libera la nostra creatività”.
L’impatto dei singoli contributi viene valutato sulla base del miglioramento del benessere mentale e delle relazioni sociali. Le persone coinvolte possono a loro volta diventare organizzatrici di altri cerchi con al centro un libro.
Un libro in prigione diventa un viaggio a riscoprire se stessi, reagendo alla lettura con i propri ricordi, anche quelli addolorati, con i propri spunti di scrittura. Metterli nel cerchio li libera dalla segregazione interiore. Incontrano i ricordi, le scritture di rimbalzo delle altre persone coinvolte alla pari.
Con tutte le immaginazioni che mi hanno permesso di scrivere molte storie, neanche un poco riesco ad avvicinarmi alla fatica di queste persone che hanno dovuto lottare con se stesse e col mondo per modificare forma e sostanza del proprio corpo.
Ma almeno, da ospite di quel loro tempo, ho condiviso alcune ore d’intensa uguaglianza.
Uscendo dalla sequenza di porte blindate dello stabilimento ho saputo che attraverso quel programma le persone partecipanti in cerchio salvavano parte del loro tempo di pena, partecipando a una ricostruzione di se stesse.
When I meet people detained in prison, I have no desire to know the charges for which they are confined or the duration of their sentences.
I share a few hours of their days, and my time draws near to theirs for a while.
They have read one of my books, expressed a wish to meet me, and completed the necessary procedures. Here I am with them.
The Reggio Emilia prison, Orione section, houses transgender individuals. They have embraced a program called Pretext, developed by a professor at Harvard University and applied for the first time in Italy.
It starts with reading a book.
“We place it at the center of our circle and allow our creativity to flow as freely as possible.”
The impact of individual contributions is assessed based on improvements in mental well-being and social relationships. Those involved can, in turn, become organizers of other circles centered around a book.
In prison, a book becomes a journey of self-discovery, a response to reading with their own memories, even the painful ones, and their own writing prompts. Placing them in the circle frees them from internal segregation. They encounter the memories, the rebound writings of other people who are involved as equals.
With all the imagination that has allowed me to write many stories, I still cannot come close to the struggles of these individuals who have had to battle with themselves and the world to reshape the form and substance of their own bodies.
But at least, as a guest in their time, I shared a few hours of profound equality.
As I exited the sequence of fortified doors of the facility, I learned that through that program, the participants in the circle saved a portion of their sentence time, participating in a reconstruction of themselves.
